Last week, the Red River Valley Woodcarvers visited Washington Elementary to introduce fifth-grade art students to wood carving. They didn’t actually carve wood, just in case you were picturing sharp knives in the hands of 12 year olds. They instead carved soap with sticks, making relief carvings of dogs, dolphins, and other easily recognizable shapes.
The students showed impressive concentration and enthusiasm for carving. One student excitedly told me how she would love to mix her love of soccer with carving … and we love hearing about crossed disciplines.
If you’re interested in getting your child involved with carving, the Woodcarvers offer classes for kids as well as adults. You can find out more on their website.
