Ten years have passed since I first discovered my passion for writing.
As a little blonde guy with a legal pad and voice recorder, I can remember conducting interviews with people from around the community. Some were past teachers, other family members, even friends in school found their way into the stories I wrote for my hometown newspaper, The Turtle Mountain Star, in Rolla, ND.
Since then, I’ve kept on writing about the things I love. My experiences working with Fargo Monthly, Bison Illustrated and most recently, Fargo Underground, have kept that magic alive. But as with any milestone, my new position as The Arts Partnership’s Communications Coordinator has me reminiscing about a time that some millennials refer to as the “good ole days”–the year 2009.
It takes some thinking to get back into the head of myself a decade ago. From drivers ed. to the death of Michael Jackson, I was just figuring out who I was. As a farm boy growing up, I had an upbringing on books and backyard adventures with my older sister. In that year, I found a path that led me off the farm and into my community.
Without even trying, I found myself drawn towards the arts and innovative people who were creating every single day. Each new person I interviewed taught me more about the shareability of art in the form of paintings, pins, patches, and stickers.
My plan in this new role is to amp up this sharing. To broadcast it from space, beaming down rainbows and sunshine as well as eery, thought-provoking images and ideas. It’s my hope that I’ll be seen as an agent of sorts for the makers and shakers of this town I call my new home. Whether it’s an in-depth story or mini-video on the arts, I’m here to cover it.
A longstanding unachieved goal of mine is to attend an event/art opening/concert/workshop each day of the week. With every ounce of energy I have, I plan to hold myself to filling in all the days in my calendar this year and beyond.
Help me reach my goal and email me your next F-M area art event; I’m ready to jump in and even better #supportlocalart.
