It’s time for another Grantee Highlight! Our Grantee Highlight series is our monthly initiative to get to know our current Individual Arts Partnership and Jade Presents Arts Partnership grantees. This month’s featured grantee is musician David Holweger of David Allen Music!
David Holweger is a singer-songwriter currently living in Fargo-Moorhead who started singing in bars during his time as a construction worker in rural North Dakota. His style brings his audiences back to the roots of country reminiscent of Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash. Over the past few years, David has opened for various national touring acts, like Dave Simonet from Trampled by Turtles, Damien Jurado, Corb Lund, Parmalee, and Phillip Phillips.
David received a $2,500 Jade Presents Arts Partnership grant to produce a brand new album. Congratulations, David! Enjoy our Q&A with the talented musician below.
Beyond other singer-songwriters, what sources inspire your work?
I get a lot of my song ideas from personal experiences and from people in my life.
What is your daily creative work schedule?
I don’t have any sort of set schedule, but try to write down anything that comes to mind for lyrics.
How do you approach the beginning of a project?
It is always different. Sometimes it starts with the words, sometimes it starts with the melody.
What is your greatest fear or challenge when facing a new project?
That a new song won’t be well received by my audience.
What do you do when you get stuck?
Walk away for a little while and come back with a fresh mind.
How does having a community of artists benefit your work?
It helps to bounce new song ideas off of people not involved in the project and get their perspective.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the field?
Write everything down and save it. You never know when a line or a chord change will work into something new.
If you had a chance to do it all over again, how would you do things differently?
I would play more live shows early on.
What was the most discouraging feedback you ever got?
That people can’t understand what I’m singing.
What was the most encouraging feedback you ever got?
That someone has really connected with my songs and it helped them through hard times.
What would you be if you couldn’t be an artist?
A construction worker.
