Family gatherings can be fraught. There are taboo topics, sensitive issues, personal opinions. Everyone has their own perspective, and sometimes it’s hard to imagine how this group of people actually grew up under the same roof. Yet the bonds are there – in shared memories, traditional food and holiday rituals.

When the Schwartz children gather for a Yahrzeit – the anniversary of their father’s death – things get awkward and complicated. Norma wants to keep the house; Herb wants to sell it. Bonnie wants a baby; Kia wants to be “the girl in the cage.” Gene wants to maintain peace; Simon wants them all to prepare for life in space.

“This script created a real family, I feel very called to maintain each of them as individuals in order to grow them as a whole, which is what the play is about to me,” says the director Scott Ecker. “The play starts with a family that is familiar around each other, yet very distant. As THE LAST SCHWARTZ progresses, the broken characters help each other become more whole individuals and create a more tolerable family that is capable of continuing as a family unit.”

Playwright Deborah Zoe Laufer brilliantly draws complex characters, using sharp dialogue, real relationships, and a little theatre magic. It’s a seamless blend of comedy and drama: laugh-out-loud funny with lots of meat on the bones. In other words, perfect for Theatre B.

“If you need something to do with your own family around the holidays, Theatre B is perfect,” says Carrie Wintersteen, Executive Director. Theatre B is known for work that gives audiences something to ponder and discuss. “We will always give you something to talk about, whether its an icebreaker for a taboo subject or a chance to pat yourselves on the back for being a pretty functional family.”

“THE LAST SCHWARTZ is no different,” Wintersteen continues. “When I read the play, I was surprised at how instantly I cared about these people, even the characters that were a little crotchety. I laughed out loud, because they did seem quintessentially Jewish and yet completely universal.”

THE LAST SCHWARTZ by Deborah Zoe Laufer runs weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas. To make sure cost is not a barrier, Theatre B offers Pay What You Will pricing on opening weekend. The ASL Interpreted performance will be Saturday, December 7, and Audio Description will be provided for the visually impaired Sunday, December 8 or by advance reservation. There will also be a Sunday Salon social and discussion following the play on Sunday, December 15th, with light snacks from BernBaum’s.
