Opening of “The Other Four” at Plains Art Museum

July 13, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

The Other Four

July 13, 2019 – November 30, 2019

William and Anna Jane Schlossman Gallery

With rare exceptions, art objects are created to be experienced visually. The Other Four is an exhibition experience that negates the visually dominant art experience hierarchy by presenting artwork designed specifically to engage the other four senses. Visitors to The Other Four will be able to touch the other side of the world, listen to conversations in the walls of the museum, feel and react to life-like cellular signals through handheld mechanical devices, and listen to unique sounds emitted by each planet in our solar system. Curated by John Schuerman, The Other Four captures the spirit of regionally-based avant-garde artists who are experimenting and producing nonvisual, sensory art. Artists include Pedram Baldari, David Bowen, Kate Casanova, Irve Dell, Wendy Fernstrum, Alison Hiltner, Nooshin Hakim Javadi, Yevgeniya Kaganovich, Aida Shahghasemi, Ken Steinbach, and Liza Sylvestre.

John Schuerman is an independent curator, self-taught artist, and former gallery director of Instinct Art Gallery in Minneapolis. He received his masters of liberal studies at Hamline University, St. Paul, MN, and has had a successful career as artist and curator since producing exhibitions on topics such as environmentalism, gender perspectives, identity, medication, money, and overpopulation.

Plains Art Museum thanks our generous members and donors for their support. Additional support provided by The McKnight Foundation, Bush Foundation, The Arts Partnership, The FUNd at Plains Art Museum, and the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funds from the North Dakota Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Breaking Bread
Noon on the last Thursday of the month

Plains staff will be baking and slicing up freshly baked bread the last Thursday of the month, June – November. Enjoy a piece of bread and stimulate your sense of taste and smell. Continue this sensory experience inside the exhibition The Other Four.

Eyes Should Be Washed
Thursday, July 25, 6 PM

Curator John Schuerman will provide an introduction to the exhibition The Other Four, followed by “Eyes Should Be Washed,” a performance art piece by artists Pedram Baldari, Katayoum Amjabi, and Nooshin Hakim Javadi. In “Eyes Should Be Washed,” performers grate many, many onions in front of the audience. This act, through the smell of the onions, brings tears to stimulated eyes in order to wash/clean them. The work is a dialogue with Iranian Poet Sohrab Sepehri, whose poems call for change in perception to find peace within self. In some cultures, especially Iranian culture, crying is considered an act of soul cleansing and is practiced through religious rituals.
