Do you remember the first time you read The Hobbit, then devoured The Lord of the Rings? Seeing those epic stories come to life on film with its amazing cast of actors and dramatic orchestral score was for many of us a truly unforgettable cultural experience. Then many years later, George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones brought another fantasy world to life in true Tolkien style. HBO worked its magic and made it a popular culture phenomenon with amazing production quality and powerful musical score.
But sweeping epic tales are not new. In 1835, Finnish poet Elias Lönnrot published a work of epic poetry, called The Kalevala, which was a compilation of Finnish folklore and mythology and one of Tolkein’s major influences. This work is regarded as the national epic of Finland and is one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. Composer Jean Sibelius drew upon this work for his colorful and dramatic Lemminkäinen Suite (Four Legends from the Kalevala). Through its four movements, our hero Lemminkäinen bumbles into many deadly and tragic situations from which he either flees for his life or is rescued by his mother, before finally journeying home.
On the other hand, the fierce female warrior Šárka, a central figure in the ancient Czech legend of The Maidens’ War, is no bumbler. Her crafty plan and masterful leadership of a group of warrior maidens wins the day in an uprising of women against men. This 12th-century Bohemian folk tale is masterfully told through music by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana in his set of six symphonic poems titled Ma Vlast (My Homeland).
This is truly a concert for everyone – longtime symphony patrons and newcomers alike!
