The art of painting is to translate the visual into what you see using color, shapes and space. We get shapes and space – it is color that is hardest to work with. In this workshop, we will learn our paints, their history, purpose, composition and use. This weekend will be an exploration of what color is, how to use it, and how we can learn to be more intuitive with the use of color and expressive mark-making. Learners will be guided through a series of practical applications of color theory including the use of complementary colors, temperature, intensity, key, hue, value, and other color concepts. Emphasis is placed on achieving desired results in composition, manipulation of space and light, form, unity, rhythm, and mood. Expect a little book making of our samples and templates, along with lots of time to really dig into our color exploration. This course is suitable for artists, watercolorists, calligraphers, scrapbookers, and people who love and want to have more colour in their lives. Beginners are welcomed.
Relax, explore, and paint this weekend. We will be working primarily with watercolor although ink, colored pencils, markers and other techniques may also be used. This will be a really fun way to try out new techniques. And there is plenty of down time as part of the weekend for relaxing, or not.
Participants will need to bring: No special supplies are needed for this class. If you have watercolored before, bring those supplies. For those with no supplies, a kit can be purchased prior to class that will have all the artist quality materials you will need. The cost of the kit is $35. A detailed supply list will be emailed out a month before the classes start.
Northern Pines Camp is a beautiful 90-mile drive from Fargo. Situated on Fish Hook Lake, it provides a quiet sanctuary of pleasant scenery and sights. The fall colors should be raging as we head out for 2 nights and 3 days of painting pleasure.
Most meals are provided. Friday night, bring a bag supper to enjoy before our first session begins. Hiking, eagle watching, walks, boating, and lovely scenery will be ours to enjoy – when we are not enjoying the vitality and creativity of you, our hosts, and teacher.
Accommodation is shared in the remodeled lodge building. This is not the summer camping from your youth. No one sleeps on a top bunk. The beds are comfortable and new. Each room has its own bathroom with shower. A large, comfortable gathering space with fireplace and tables for doing crafts and jigsaw puzzles leads to a large kitchen for snacks and personal dietary planning. Bring your own bedding and towels or rent from the camp for a less hassle option. For those not wanting to share accommodation (rooms at Northern Pines sleep 2 – 6 people and are assigned based on registration acceptance), there are option in Park Rapids for local hotels or B&B’s. You can participate in our workshop and enjoy meals with us but pop back to your hotel room for a sleep.
Registration fees are not refundable unless we can fill your place with someone from the waiting list or you make a private arrangement with a friend to take your place.
What does the fee include?
The fee for the weekend includes the following: Shared accommodation in the Lodge (typically 3 – 4 people per room with a bathroom in each room), all meals on Saturday, a Sunday brunch buffet, and a weekend of classes with Anne.
On Friday night, bring a bag supper to enjoy before our first workshop session begins. Bring your own lovely bedding, pillow and towels or rent bedding from camp for a $7.50 fee.
