Artists often dream of faraway lands, of childhood dreams and nightmares, and beautiful fairy tales that entice our minds to believe in something past ourselves and the realms we live in. We cling to our imaginations and the stories woven within.
Wonderful Works of Whimsy is an exhibition celebrating the jovial nature, innocence, and quirkiness of our artistic whimsies. Whimsy is a style engaged with bright, saturated colors, surreal imagery, and often unexpected comedy and romance. Allow your inner child to take over and join us as we commemorate the coming of Spring!

The exhibition is open to all artists 18 years and older currently residing in North Dakota or Minnesota region. All work must be original in concept and not copied from another artist’s work. No video, film, installations, or artwork that requires special installation or assembly will be accepted. Entries must be received by Midnight CST February 1, 2019. Accepted work will be exhibited at Spirit Room from February 11th – April 13th.

$10 per piece for up to two entries. All fees are non-refundable and payable through PayPal or in cash. Fees include a basic, one-year membership to the Spirit Room.
McCal Joy will view the exhibit to select the award-winning artworks. Winners will be announced at the opening reception, Thursday, February 14, 2019 at 5:30p.m.
Accepted artists should deliver their work to the Spirit Room during business hours, Monday – Saturday 1-5p.m. If this time is not conducive, please contact us to make arrangements. Insurance is the responsibility of the artist. All entries will be handled with reasonable care, but neither Spirit Room nor its representatives will be responsible for loss or damage.
All Accepted artwork is due by Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 5:00p.m.
All works for this exhibition must be original, completed, and ready to hang. Substitutions of accepted works will not be allowed and all delivered work must match the submitted image. Accepted works should be accompanied by an artist statement detailing the piece’s connection to the show’s theme.
Frames, mats, and wiring must be professional quality and in good condition. No chrome frames. Wiring must be in good condition and substantial enough for the weight of the artwork. All paintings must be framed or gallery wrapped with fully painted edges. Two-dimensional works on paper must be framed and under Plexiglass, unless artwork medium is pastel. Artwork using pastel may be framed and under glass (at the artist’s own risk.) No saw tooth hangers will be accepted, any work affixed with this may be rejected from the show per the curator’s discretion. All freestanding sculptures must have felt pads attached to the bottom. Please affix a label to the back of your piece with your name, title of piece, medium, and price.
Accepted artwork may not be removed from Spirit Room prior to April 13, 2019.
Any artwork sold to the public will incur a 30% commission. Prices quoted on the entry form may not be changed after acceptance.
No purchased work may be removed from Spirit Room until the close of the exhibition.
Artwork that is “Not for Sale” – Please add NFS to the description box of the artwork in question.
Works are entered at the artist’s own risk. Artwork will be handled with reasonable care. Spirit Room and its representatives will not be responsible for loss, theft, or damage of artworks while in the gallery’s possession or in transit. Spirit Room encourages artists to insure their artwork.
Spirit Room reserves the right to photograph or use any of the works for publicity purposes. Images of accepted entries will become property of Spirit Room to be used for the catalogue and other printed materials, archives, website, and for educational purposes. All copyrights for the artwork are retained by the artist. The artist waives any claim, including any claim for invasion of the right of privacy of copyright, against Spirit Room, its directors, employees, and volunteers.
The submission of entries to this competition shall be understood to constitute an agreement on the part of the artist to all rules and conditions as set forth in this prospectus. Entries not meeting the criteria listed herein will be disqualified, and the entry fee will not be refunded. Spirit Room reserves the right to not display excessive nudity or offensive subject matter. This is at the discretion of the Executive Director of Spirit Room.
Due to Spirit Room’s extremely limited storage space, artwork left more than 30 days after April 13, 2019 will be deemed the property of Spirit Room unless arrangements have been made in writing and agreed upon by both parties.
