CALL FOR PUBLIC ART: Eden Prairie’s Public Art Program
As part of a continued commitment to highlight original works of art throughout the community, the City of Eden Prairie is seeking projects created by Minnesota artists for public display from June 2019 through May 2020. Artists retain ownership and loan pieces to the City for the 11-month period, and artwork must be appropriate for Minnesota’s extreme weather. Selected artists are paid a $1,000 stipend to exhibit their work, and coordinate with the City staff on specific site selection and installation. The City is seeking donors who would like to contribute to a fund for purchasing the artworks so they can remain on permanent display after the exhibition period. It is hoped this program contributes to the vitality of the City and builds a foundation for public art which adds meaning in our community for years to come.
BACKGROUND AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Providing a public venue for exhibiting and viewing artwork supports the City’s vision by adding richness to the environment while building an appreciation for public art in our community. Secure display platforms are available at the Art Center, Outdoor Center and Purgatory Creek Park. Additional exhibition locations may include the Senior Center, Minnesota River Vista overlook and tunnel, and more. Proposals are reviewed by City staff and commission members, and are chosen based on artistic merit, safety, durability and relationship to the site.

The building that houses the Art Center was donated to the City in 2008 by the family of Roger Sampson, a former resident who built the structure as a place to create art before he passed away. It is the largest single gift ever given to the City. The mission of the Art Center is to enhance the quality of life and foster creativity in our community by providing access to the arts for people of all ages and abilities. The Art Center works to achieve its mission by offering exceptional programming in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass, fiber, mixed media and more. There are opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels – from toddlers to older adults, beginner to advanced.
The Eden Prairie Outdoor Center is a refurbished historic cabin located on the north shore of Staring Lake. It offers a wide range of classes, workshops, trips and activities in the fields of outdoor recreation and environmental education. The site includes nature trails through forest, wetland and prairie environments, as well as a fishing pier and observatory.
The Eden Prairie Senior Center is a hub of activity for adults and seniors of all ages. Its mission is to provide for social, recreational, educational, psychological and physical needs; enhance the visibility of older adults; and promote their participation in all aspects of community life.
Purgatory Creek Park
Located at the busy intersection of Technology Drive and Prairie Center Drive, Purgatory Creek Park is a highly visible urban park. Amenities include the Veterans Memorial, hiking and biking trails, an open-air pavilion and beautiful plantings and flower beds.
Additional locations throughout the City may be available based on project and coordination with City staff.
